Unique Wine Barrel Gifts Made in the USA!

The season of giving is quickly coming upon us.  Look at the holiday decorations, right there next to the Halloween skeletons! Its begun.  Here are some great ideas for gift giving time for the wine lovers on your list.

A beautiful, hand crafted wine barrel clock.  Made from an authentic used Napa Valley wine barrel head, the clock has barrel markings burnt into the wood, and as each is unique, these marks will vary. A one of a kind piece, not found anywhere else.  Hanging hardware is already installed, just pop in a AA battery and it’s ready to go.

For a personalized gift, I suggest the  Personalized Quarter Barrel Head Table.  It would make a beautiful addition to anyone’s wine bar, wine cellar, or anywhere in your home. Laser engraving the recipient’s’ name, year, place, city and state, make this table a unique wine gift.  The table comes with a wrought iron base and some assembly is required

A Wine Barrel Lazy Susan is also an excellent gift for the wine aficionado in your life.  It is hand crafted from a recycled head of a wine barrel.  It is stained and varnished in your choice of light oak, dark oak or red wine stain.  Each lazy susan has the barrel maker’s branding mark on top and that wonderful aroma of aged wine infused into the barrel on the underside.  What a perfect gift for get togethers with the family, parties or game night.

Experience Napa Valley Wine Tasting in style!

Wine Tasting in NapaFor us, wine and everything about it has become a staple. Let’s step back in time…We were newlyweds while Lance was serving in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Alameda, California. That was wonderful news for us, because we then only lived 40 minutes from the Napa Valley. We visited Napa Valley as often as we could. We learned to love everything about wine and the Napa Valley. We enjoyed frequenting our favorite wineries. Here is a list of some of our favorites:

  • Start you day with a glass of champagne at Domaine Chandon. The tour is very interesting and the atmosphere is splendid.
  • V. Sattui – This award winning winery has a wonderful picnic area to enjoy.
  • Robert Mondavi (reservations suggested) – They have a wonderful tour that ends with a food and wine pairing.
  • Sterling Vineyards – (unfortunately no relation) – A gondola (aerial tram) ride takes you to the winery. The view is breathtaking and the wine is fabulous.
  • Hill Family Estate is a great family owned winery. – Be sure to tell Ryan we said hello!

We also try to add one or two new ones to the list. There are over 300 wineries to visit in the Napa Valley, so you will have to select your favorites to visit, unless you have a month to spare…

We hot air ballooned twice over the Napa Valley and hope to fly again soon. It is an exhilarating experience as your balloon rises with the roar of the burners and then floats in silence, drifting with the wind as your overlook the wine country’s majestic landscape. The views are spectacular! On a clear day, you can see all the way to San Francisco. BalloonRides.com, the company that we flew with, is having a great Mother’s Day special. This really is one of those experiences that will stick with you for a lifetime. If you have not experienced the pleasure of a hot air balloon ride, we encourage you to try. Up, up and away!

Unfortunately, the days of free wine tasting have ended in the California Wine Country. If you visit the Chamber of Commerce in Napa, they often have 2 for 1 wine tasting coupons. Also, some wineries offer to waive the $5-10 tasting fee with the purchase of a bottle of wine.

I found a great Napa resource at NapaTouristGuide.com. Wally tells it like it is! You will find The Best Hotels, Best Dining, Best Wineries, and Best Agendas on NapaTouristGuide.com! He also has quite a few links for wine tasting coupons. Wally has done his homework and you will benefit from his sage advice.

Another resource for the Napa Valley is Ecouncierges.com. They offer a printable guide to Napa that has a lot of great information and coupons. One note – V. Sattui did not accept our printed coupons, so you may want to pick up a guide at one of the many 4 or 5 star hotels in Napa.

Enjoy lunch at Taylor’s Automatic Refresher. They are an upscale burger restaurant that has super burgers and you can get a glass of wine with lunch.

The Napa Valley is a wonderful and magical place to visit. It will definitely be a treasured vacation to remember.

Cheers!

Grapevine Tables are an exquisite work of art. The grapevine base is sculpted from 60-100 year old retired grapevines from California’s premiere wine country.

Amazing pieces of Grapevine Art can be displayed by themselves or you can highlight your jewelry against their beautiful natural colors. Made from the tops and main trunks of ancient retired wine producing grapevines, they are hand selected for their natural beauty. These pieces have lots of movement.

Grapevine Lamps are crafted from retired grape vines from California’s premiere wine growing region. With some careful shaping and finishing, each piece becomes a work of art suitable for warming the heart of a true wine lover.

Grapevine Trees, Grapevine Balls and Grapevine Deer are handmade from real, natural growing vines from the rolling hills of Tennessee. Grapevine balls and Grapevine trees are a beautiful indoor or outdoor grapevine decor accent that can be displayed year round.

Grapevine Wreaths are custom made with quality materials. They are perfect to display around a bar, a wine rack, a wine cellar, a kitchen, or on a front door.

This recycled art will be a treasured gift for many years.

7 Tips to Help you Plan a Successful Wine Tasting Party

Hosting a wine tasting party can be fun and rewarding.

Listed below are 7 tips to help you plan a successful Wine Tasting Party. For more detailed information, you can read our Wine Tasting Party Tips article.

Wine Tasting Party
Wine Tasting Party

1. Determine the theme of your wine tasting.

2. Send out invitations. The perfect wine tasting party size is 8 -12 people.

3. Provide a simple cheese platter, fruit, bread, crackers, and dessert.

4.Typically, when tasting wines, you will want to work from dry to sweet with white wines and progress from light to full-bodied with red wines. Start with younger wines and move to the more mature wines. Ensure you have a dump bucket available.

5. Pour approximately 2 ounces of wine per person for each tasting. That is about an inch in the glass. Each bottle will provide approximately 10-12 “tastings” or 25 ounces.

6. You may like to provide tasting note cards to encourage your guests to share their thoughts and humor on each wine. Here is a sample Wine Tasting Score Sheet

7. It is fun to tally the Score Sheets and award a small prize for the best bottle of wine.

Who knows, you may just discover a new type of wine that you like.

Cheers!
